If you’re sending money to India, you’ve probably considered Western Union. It’s one of the largest money transfer services in the world. But it’s a good idea to learn more about Western Union India fees and exchange rates, which both contribute to the full cost of your transfer, before you make your choice.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to send money to India with Western Union.
We'll also introduce the Wise account, which allows you to send, spend, and receive your money across the globe in over 40 currencies – all at the fair mid-market rate.
How to send money to India using Western Union
Here’s a quick guide to sending money to India with Western Union, from creating an account to completing your transfer.
-
Sign up for a Western Union account. You can sign up in the app or online. You’ll need to confirm your account with a government ID, such as a passport or driver’s license.¹
-
Add a payment method. How are you going to send money to India? These are your options:
- Bank account. Enter your bank account details and you’ll be all set.
- Credit or debit card. These can be fast, but credit card transfers will almost always cost you a cash advance fee.
- Google Pay or Apple Pay. Keep in mind the Google Pay transfer fee is 24 USD. And if you use a credit card for those, it’ll cost a cash advance fee.
-
Go in person if you prefer. To make a Western Union transfer to India in person, it’s as simple as showing up to a Western Union agent location with a valid government ID and all the recipient’s information you need, along with a payment method.
-
Choose your recipient’s payment method. The person you’re sending to in India, called your recipient, can receive money by bank transfer, UPI, or cash pickup. UPI will only require a simple handle ID, and cash pickup is available at 111,000 agent locations with no banking details required.¹
-
Check the exchange rate and fees before you make the transfer. Your costs will come in transfer fees and there will be a markup on the exchange rate.
-
Note the money transfer control number (MTCN) to track the transfer. Your recipient may need to present it for cash pickup.
Transfer limits to India
The Western Union limit to India depends on whether your account is verified with a government ID or not. Verified users usually have higher limits.
These limits apply to how much money you can send. Other transaction limits may apply for your credit card issuer or bank.
Monthly or weekly transfer limits may also apply. Check your Western Union account information for more details.

Fees and payment methods
Western Union India fees depend on the methods you’re using to send money and what kind of account you’re sending it to. Transfers to UPI accounts, along with bank accounts and debit cards, most often don’t have transaction fees.
Bank transfers tend to be the slowest of your choices, but often the most affordable.
Using credit cards will often carry a fee of 24 USD, and cash pickup a smaller fee.³

The hidden cost: Western Union USD to INR exchange rate
There’s a transfer fee for many Western Union transfers to India. But there’s always another cost on every transfer, and it’s buried in the exchange rate.
The “real” exchange rate–the one you see on Google, for instance–is called the mid-market rate. When you set up a transfer with Western Union, you won’t change your money at the mid-market rate. Western Union takes a “currency spread” or “markup” on the exchange rate to make money on the transfer.
To find out the Western Union India fees you’re paying via the exchange rate markup, compare the value you’re transferring to the value at the mid-market rate–then check what ultimately arrives in INR. What’s getting taken out goes in Western Union’s pocket—unless another third party, like a credit card issuer or intermediary bank, charges additional fees.
